This quilt project is organized by a group of people who want to have a quilt created to celebrate the America 250 Initiative and to show off the Washington counties in the United States. There are 31 Washington counties and, hopefully, all will be submitting a block for the quilt.  We want to show off the creative talents we have here in Washington County, UTAH, so we will be submitting a block.

The deadline to submit your block to be considered for the national quilt is March 10, 2026. The block needs to be sent to the national group by March 15, 2026.

To submit your block, contact Teresa Orton at 435-862-9282 (cell or text) and bring it to the DUP Museum at 145 North 100 East, St. George.  The Board of Washington County Historical Society will review all entries and select the one to submit to the national quilt.  The remaining blocks will be put into a local quilt and be put on display in Washington County.

Quilt Square Instructions:
• Finished size: 12” x 12”
• Seam allowance: Include a 0.5” seam allowance on all sides (cut size: 13” x 13”)
• Fabric: 100% cotton

Design Guidelines:
• The design of your square is entirely up to you and your quilter of choice. Please include a nod to the spirit of George Washington and/or an image meaningful to your county.
• Your quilter may be any age or skill level, and they are welcome to use buttons, beads, or additional mixed media to add flair. Your design can be as simple or as detailed as you’d like.
• Please include your state’s postal abbreviation in the lower right corner of the square, sized approximately 2” x 2” (mind the seam allowance). This can be hand-stitched on top or incorporated into your design.
• To help unify the quilt, shades of Pantone “Classic Blue” and “True Red” must be incorporated somewhere in your design.

Accompanying Paragraph:
• Please have your quilter include a short paragraph explaining why they chose their design.

Once the national quilt is done, it will become a traveling exhibit and will come to our Washington County to be displayed for a period of time. This is a great opportunity to showcase your skills and be part of a national celebration of our country’s 250th anniversary.

Thank you.
