We provide programs at monthly Guild meetings. A special speaker, quilter, or other topic of interest will be featured. Our Guild meeting programs are always worth attending. September 12: Trunk Show by Angi Holt
Our first program for the year is brought to us by one of our own members, Angi
Holt.

Angi was born and raised in St. George, a proud descendent of the original pioneer settlers of Utah’s Dixie. She has known of the magic and love held in quilts from her earliest memories. She is a founding member of the Red Rock Modern Quilters and also decided to rejoin the Dixie Quilt Guild last year. Angi’s quilting obsession wasn’t firmly established until 2008, when she realized her planned and purchased projects would take many years to complete, and more money to have them quilted than she could possibly ever afford…she clearly needed to buy a longarm so she could quilt them herself. Her full-time job definitely interferes with her quilting time, but she is a firm believer that planning,designing and purchasing quilt projects is a completely different hobby than actually piecing and quilting. Angi is a self-described basic, possibly intermediate quilter, but an enthusiastic one…and she is happy to share what she has learned through her journey this far.

October 10: One Pattern, Many Possibilities by Christa Watson
This month we have Christa Watson returning to talk to us about quilting on your domestic machine.

She is an enthusiastic, full-time quilter from Las Vegas, Nevada who enjoys traveling & teaching others how to find joy in making their own quilts from start to finish. Christa has written many patterns and books with a focus on domestic machine quilting. She’s also a prolific fabric designer and a cheerleader for the modern quilting movement. She believes that quilts don’t have to be perfect to be functional and beautiful. If you can dream it, you can do it!

November 14: Trunk Show by Melissa Corry
In November, we have Melissa Corry here to share a trunk show of her quilts.

Melissa started quilting as a hobby in 2005 but since starting her blog, Happy Quilting, in 2010 her hobby has turned into a passion. Melissa’s passion for quilting has led to creating her own designs that she shares as tutorials, published works, a pattern line, and even her own books. She loves designing and finds inspiration in just about everything and anything. Melissa, her husband and their five children live in Cedar City, Utah. January 9: Introduction to Emily and Collage Quilts
This month we welcome quilt designer and pattern-company owner Emily Taylor for a lecture and trunk show.

Emily Taylor, from Draper, Ut, is the founder of Collage Quilter, a quilting pattern and kit company known for two signature techniques: parchment pressing and foundation panel quilting. Her patterns and kits have earned a loyal following, with over 2,200 customer reviews praising their clarity and design. She is also the founder of Verdant Fabrics, a premium textile design studio creating botanically inspired fabric collage kits. Plan to attend the meeting and enjoy a trunk show of Emily’s finished quilts.

February 13: Journey of an Art Quilter by Cindy Grisdela
We will be welcoming a favorite teacher, Cindy Grisdela.

Cindy is going to talk to us about how she made the transition from traditional quilter to artist. She started out over 30 years ago making quilts using traditional patterns and techniques. With examples from her own quilts, she will describe how her work evolved into a unique contemporary style that has won awards and is juried into fine art and craft shows all over the country. She comes to us all the way from Reston, VA. Cindy encourages her students to embrace the process of artistic design and let go of the rules to embrace their inner creativity. Her books give clear instructions for building a toolbox of techniques, using color effectively, and adding texture with a variety of stitching motifs. Not following a pattern means not knowing exactly how a design is going to turn out–anything can happen, and that’s exciting!

March 13: Through the Seasons with Wool Applique by Tina Cox
This month we have our very own Tina Cox giving us a trunk show of her
wonderful wool work.

After selling her flower shop in 1996, Tina found herself having time to begin quilting. Tina was intrigued by her sister-in-law’s beautiful quilts and embroidery, and was able to learn from her, loving every moment.

While working at Scrap Apple Quilt Store, Tina discovered wool applique and decided to try it. With little wool available to buy in St George, she began experimenting with dyeing wool. Tina bought wool scraps and the tools needed, researched methods, and began. Her first batch was a disaster, so she tried again a few days later. Dyeing wool is always unpredictable, and that makes it exciting and fun. Lifting the wool from the pot on the stove still amazes Tina.

In 2019, Eyeful of Wool was created, and Tina did her first quilt show at the Utah Quilt Guild in Layton. Years have passed, and dyeing wool, creating patterns, and making samples and kits fill her days. As a result, Tina has made many friends and loyal customers. Meeting people who share her love for wool has been a wonderful adventure.

May 8: Stitched – A story about quilters

This month we welcome Eli McCann, a Salt-Lake-City-based lawyer, writer, and podcaster. He is the author of Stitched, a New York Times Best Seller, featuring a group of quilters and competition quilting. He writes a monthly humor column for The Salt Lake Tribune, where he frequently explores cultural and religious ideas. Since 2016, McCann has produced and cohosted the storytelling podcast and live storytelling show, Strangerville. His writing and storytelling has been featured in publications throughout the world, including The Washington Post, Newsweek, HuffPost, BBC, and many others.

June 12: Seminole Patchwork Then & Now by Kristin Echols
Our final program of the year features Kristin Echols.

Kristin became intrigued by Seminole patchwork after seeing the technique on Simply Quilts. She found all the books she could on the subject and started incorporating Seminole strip piecing into her quilts and home dec projects. She has been teaching these techniques for over 15 years. In her lecture, she will share the history of the Seminole Indians and how their unique approach to patchwork became a vital source of income for the tribes. See examples of their patchwork over the decades in clothing and crafts and learn about the significance of the designs in their culture. Modern examples of Seminole quilts will also show the versatility of these beautiful designs.
